The first contracts under the LIFE After Coal Pl project, i.e. “Life after coal”, have been signed!
2 September 2023

On April 12, we started signing contracts within the Consortium implementing the project titled: LIFE After Coal Pl.

Jacek Bogusławski, Member of the Management Board of the Wielkopolska Voivodeship, met with the co-beneficiaries of this project in Wągrowiec, Słupca, Konin, Turek and Ostrów Wielkopolski. Further contracts will be signed soon.

Let us remind you that the project worth PLN 85 million entitled LIFE After Coal Pl, or “Life after coal”, received EU financial support in the amount of over PLN 51 million from the LIFE Program. Funds in the amount of over PLN 28 million come from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, and the remaining funds are the own funds of all co-beneficiaries.

The local government of the Greater Poland Voivodeship is the main coordinator of the Project, which is intended to implement the Climate Neutrality Strategy – Eastern Greater Poland 2040, which was adopted by the Management Board of the Greater Poland Voivodeship in 2021. This strategy defines the policy of the Provincial Government aimed at achieving the EU climate goals at the regional level, resulting directly from EU documents, such as: the European Green Deal, the Ready for 55 Package, the Clean Planet and the Hydrogen Strategy for a climate-neutral Europe.

This project is also consistent with the concept of the just transformation process of Eastern Greater Poland in the context of the fight against global warming and climate change. An important aspect will therefore be to focus on climate-neutral energy carriers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as improve energy efficiency. However, the overarching goal is to achieve climate neutrality in Eastern Greater Poland by 2040 and, among others, The cities of Kalisz and Ostrów Wlkp. – in the process of just transformation, also taking into account the needs of social groups at risk of exclusion and marginalization.

The project will strengthen local government administration bodies, including: through vocation
district and municipal climate advisors or creation of databases and IT systems for assessments
energy. It is also planned to prepare thermal modernization projects
real estate and reporting results. Local governments will also be equipped with knowledge regarding
effective use of dedicated funds, including funds worth over four hundred million euros
Just Transition Fund.

The signing of agreements within the Consortium opens a formal chapter for the co-beneficiaries, serving, among other things, to mobilize financial resources for the implementation of the Project and assembling a team of over thirty district and municipal climate advisors who, after appropriate training and completing dedicated postgraduate studies, will take actions to implement the Kinetic Neutrality Strategy Eastern Greater Poland 2040 . Climate advisors will start working in local government units from July this year. Agreements within the consortium also regulate the method of cooperation and communication as well as the transfer of funds for the implementation of the project. According to the assumptions of the LIFE Program, our Project is intended to serve not only Eastern Greater Poland, but over time the entire Voivodeship and other coal regions in Poland and Europe will benefit from the experience, innovations and solutions gained.
