Conference opening the project entitled LIFE AFTER COAL PL – Implementation of the Strategy for Climate Neutrality Eastern Wielkopolska 2040
6 October 2023

On June 29, a conference was held in Konin, opening a new, pioneering project, dedicated in particular to post-coal areas. “Life after coal” is an attempt to achieve climate neutrality while maintaining the principles of just transformation, honoring the assumptions of sustainable development.

The conference location is not accidental. The Oskard Cultural Center in Konin is a hexagonal building with unique, modernist architecture, a building remembering ambitious plans and great initiatives, tightly surrounded by housing estates created for the needs of employees of nearby mines and power plants. Big plans and initiatives remain, the building has undergone an impressive renovation, and the residents of Konin are watching the region change from a coal-based to a hydrogen-based one.

Life after coal exists, but the transformations are usually painful, hence, at the conference officially opened by Marshal Jacek Bogusławski, a debate was held entitled “how to talk to people about necessary changes and how to engage them in co-creating these changes.” Co-beneficiaries of the Project took part in the debate, efficiently moderated by Dr. Marzena Cypryańska Nezlek from SWPS University.
There was also a debate with representatives of provincial governments, moderated by prof. Ph.D. Andrzej Mizgajski from Adam Mickiewicz University, presented the role of LIFE projects in regional environmental management.
Mrs. Jowita Maćkowiak, Director of the Greater Poland Spatial Planning Office, talked about the transformation of Eastern Greater Poland in planning and strategic documents.
